Ubin Zone Captain Andy Dinesh has completed his video of the ICCS Chek Jawa 2008 cleanup – the video footage is from Chek Jawa and it is peppered with facts from the 2008 ICCS results.

This is our first video out since Wesley’s in 2004; congratulations, Andy!

The data has been streaming in from returning Site and Zone Captains since this morning, as well as emails from Organisers. The captains have been reporting in physically to the ICCS HQ at the Department of Biological Sciences's Life Sciences Lab 7 at the National University of Singapore – where pizza awaits the hungry souls. From 9.30am to 7pm (and counting) Data Manager Anand Ramchand has been preparing and processing data and this will continue in to the night. We've also been pushing photos up to the web and all agree that web2.0 has made life so much easier thiese days!

This is important for all organisers – the ICCS Data Card and Excel Submission Sheets have been updated – cleanup organisers can download the new copies at the ICCS Downloads page.

This version reflects the changes introduced to the Data Card by the Ocean Conservancy for the 2008 cleanup – essentially there are now two categories for bags – paper or plastic.

The Excel submission sheet for Organisers to submit their site data has been updated as well.

See the full data set for beaches on the ICCS Webpage. Mangrove results (still pending one site) were up earlier. Overall results and comparison will follow later.

At International Coastal Cleanups throughout the world, you will see about one-third the volunteers carefully check off items against a list of categories or marine debris. All that data is collated by the end of the session with every three data cards consolidated into one until there remains only one summarising the site’s results. It’s a wonderful system that has reduced lots of work and delays. In Singapore we have posted data for mangroves online THE SAME DAY since 2001 and since 2002 for beaches.

It doesn’t happen by magic though! When the cleanup volunteers head home, Zone Captains return to the Raffles Museum – the ICCS headquarters – where photos are uploaded and data is processed to generate charts and total debris from around the country. Once all the data is in, this data is submitted to the Ocean Conservancy which publishes an annual report based on global data.

We track the data coming in and ensure we get it all the same weekend. That way no one has any homework after the cleanup a can see their results the next day! Google Spreadheets comes in real handy with its live uploads and multiple user data entry. We have to do a good job to ensure the volunteer’s efforts are not in vain! And by making the data public, anyone can use it.
