Tanah Merah is the newest zone in the ICCS programme as it was added to Singapore’s shoreline recently. This stretch is host to non-recreational beaches which are not cleared of marine debris regularly, as they are not setup for public use as yet.

Marine life has already taken up residence here and immediately, face a constant pressure from marine trash, mostly recreational trash – e.g. plastic bottles, bags, wrappings, straws and styrofoam. This mostly single-use consumer plastic is washed ashore but also circulates in the ecosystem, affecting wildlife and eventually people too.

There is life on the shore!

There is an interest by many groups to do their part for marine life beyond the annual September event in Singapore. They wish to raise consumer awareness about the extent and impact of litter in the marine environment and we would like them to also witness our inter-tidal biodiversity and marvel at their resilience for surviving the many challenges they face. On top of all this, at Tanah Merah, marine life is still fighting the effects of the 2010 oil spill.

In order to respond and amplify this interest through meaningful a coastal cleanup, the International Coastal Cleanup Singapore Coordinators have initiated a programme of Year-Round Coastal Cleanup. We bring our focus to Tanah Merah initially and have identified specific dates in advance, in the hope of combining the efforts of several interested groups. A dedicated team will work in support of these groups.

This second year-round coastal cleanup (YRCC) at Tanah Merah is conducted as part of Earth Day celebrations and we make this call to Organisations to participate in this effort.
